McDonald's McFlurry Drama: What's the Deal with the New Packaging?

Is the new McFlurry packaging enough to drive loyal customers away? McDonald’s recently made a big change to its iconic frozen treat, and some fans are not happy about it. In fact, some are saying they’re ready to switch to Dairy Queen’s Blizzard instead.

One TikTok user, TatYana (@gbelliana), recently shared her frustrating experience with McDonald’s drive-thru, where she wasn’t thrilled with the new McFlurry cup. Her video has since gone viral, racking up over 398,300 views, with viewers chiming in on their own experiences.

What’s the McFlurry Change?

On Sept. 4, McDonald’s announced it would be changing the McFlurry’s packaging. The chain is swapping the plastic lid for a more eco-friendly “four-flap” cup. They’re also replacing the plastic McFlurry spoon with a smaller black spoon, aiming to reduce plastic waste.

According to McDonald’s, this move will help reduce waste and is part of their goal to have 100% of their consumer packaging made from renewable, recycled, or certified materials by 2025.

Not Everyone’s Thrilled About It

While McDonald’s is promoting the switch as environmentally friendly, not all customers are excited. One TikTok user, Chey (@cheymilli), wasn’t impressed. She joked, “Is this a tiny takeout box?” when looking at the new packaging.

TatYana shared her thoughts in her own TikTok video, expressing her frustration. “$4 for this and it’s not even full,” she captioned the video.

Showing off her new McFlurry cup, she pointed out the small amount of ice cream inside, topped with Oreo dust.

“Why is it in a paper cup?” she asked. “McDonald’s just finds more and more ways to p*** me off.”

She concluded.

Is the Dairy Queen Blizzard Different?

With customers talking about switching to Dairy Queen, let’s compare the two. Like the McFlurry, Dairy Queen’s Blizzard starts at 12 ounces for a small. But you can go bigger, with the large size reaching up to 21 ounces.

Fans of the Blizzard say it stands out for its larger, better-distributed mix-ins. One Narcity review praised the Blizzard for having “much bigger chunks that tasted more like real cookies.”

How Viewers Reacted to the McFlurry Change?

TatYana’s video sparked plenty of conversation. One commenter, Quninia (@quninia), pointed out, “Y’all just forgot all about Dairy Queen. Those Blizzards have Oreos throughout.”

TatYana herself responded, saying she’s ready to make the switch: “Ima have to start going to DQ cause I’m canceling McDonald’s.”

Another viewer shared their own frustration, saying, “I had to start going to Dairy Queen cause none of the McDs mix the McFlurries anymore.”

On the other hand, some viewers saw the bright side. One user, @choppingshart, actually preferred the change, commenting, “Honestly prefer this tbh. Their old cups were too small to self-mix very well.”

Another added, “This cup looks like it will travel better with DoorDash/ UberEats orders. That way the top isn’t just open air and melting faster.”
