About the Department:
Department of Zoology of Kalimpong College was established on 7th December 1973 with a novel motto “Seek and Ye shall find” and its goals are ‘Quality Education, Access and Equality’. The missions of the department, is to educate young minds of this rural area about the beauty of “Animal Science”. In 1997 the department was upgraded and started teaching Zoology honours.The founder teachers were Dr. SubhashSamanta and Dr. R. K. Roy. Zoology is an important field of science that applies to many real-world situations.The subject helps to understand and preserve the vast diversity of species on our planet, especially of this Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity hotspot.The department has three well equipped laboratories and five teachers. In Honours we have total of 14 intake capacity.The department of Zoology has taken the challenge of imparting proper education and training to the students to explore and conserve the rich biodiversity of this region and to utilize it scientifically. The following are some activities taken up by the Department:
- Students are being regularly encouraged to take part in field study and Zoological excursions.
- Students are being regularly trained to estimate population density of plankton, insects, and estimation of dissolved oxygen, free carbon-di-oxide and total alkalinity of water samples.
- Faculty members of the department researching on the diversity of plankton, ichthyofauna and entomofauna of this region. They have published several research papers and attended seminars and symposium.
- Blood grouping camp and awareness programme on blood donation has been organised.
- Regularly publishing Wall magazine, organizing seminars, Science exhibitions, workshops, invited talks etc.
Most of the students who have passed from this department progressed to higher education, like M. Sc. In Zoology, Ph. D programme, MBA, Environmental Science etc. Many of our students are working as school teachers; some are in the Civil Administrative Services and a few are working in Colleges and Universities. Beautiful and biodiversity rich environment, obedient students and their cooperative parents are our strength. If more faculty and space is provided, our students may achieve their goals.
