Julianne Hough is opening up about the tragic loss of her two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Lexi and Harley, who died suddenly in 2019.
The Dancing with the Stars star, now 36, had shared the sad news of their passing back in 2019, but it wasn’t until a recent appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show on August 27 that she revealed how they died.
The Devastating Call!
During the interview, Julianne recounted the moment she learned about the loss of her dogs. “I woke up before my phone even rang, and I just knew,” she said. When she picked up the phone, her assistant was on the other end, “just screaming.”
Julianne explained that, before Lexi and Harley’s deaths, she had never had issues with coyotes in her yard, and she even had a fence. Tragically, the coyotes managed to get to her dogs despite these precautions.

A Difficult Time in Her Life!
The loss of Lexi and Harley came during an incredibly challenging period for Julianne. She was dealing with the “unraveling” of her eight-year friendship with her longtime assistant while launching her new company, Kinrgy. On top of that, she was going through a separation from her now-ex-husband, Brooks Laich.
“I had asked for a separation,” Julianne recalled, “and then 10 days later, my dogs were killed by coyotes.”
As she shared her story, Julianne became visibly emotional. “I felt so out of integrity, or out of alignment,” she said, describing how the loss of her dogs, who represented “unconditional love and safety,” shook her deeply.

Grateful for Their Final Moments Together!
Despite the pain, Julianne found solace in the fact that Lexi and Harley passed away together. “I’m so grateful they went together,” she said.
“I’m grateful that it happened quickly and that we were able to recover their bodies. But at that time, it felt like the unraveling of the absolute safety of unconditional love.”
In the days following their deaths, Julianne paid tribute to her pups on Instagram, writing,
“Thank you for the timeless memories. Thank you for your magic. Thank you for being the most consistent and constant beings in my life. Thank you for being you. Thank you for being my guardians on this earth and even more so now.”
