James Taylor, the legendary singer-songwriter known for hits like “Fire and Rain,” recently explained why his scheduled performance at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) was unexpectedly canceled. The 76-year-old musician was set to perform on the first night of the convention, held on Monday, August 19, but his set was cut short due to time constraints.
Taylor was seen rehearsing earlier in the day at Chicago’s United Center, where the convention was being held. His rehearsal was reportedly smooth, with Taylor working alongside musical director Rickey Minor and singers Kenya Hathaway and Mathew Jonson. Fans and friends were excited to see him perform, especially since Taylor has been a long-time supporter of the Democratic Party.
However, as the evening progressed, it became clear that there wouldn’t be enough time for Taylor’s planned performance. The schedule was running behind, and when the time came for President Joe Biden to take the stage, Taylor’s set was removed to keep the event on track.

Taylor took to Instagram the next day to explain what happened. He expressed his disappointment but also shared how honored he felt to be part of the event. “It was exciting to see and hear so many of the speakers at the opening night of the Democratic convention here in Chicago. And we had a great rehearsal with Rickey Minor and terrific singers, Kenya Hathaway and Mathew Jonson before the event,” he wrote.
He continued by acknowledging the enthusiastic response from the audience that night, which contributed to the event running longer than expected.
“Lots of friends got in touch, wishing us well: Kim, Owen Young, and me. But it became clear, as the evening unfolded that there wouldn’t be time for our ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ with cello and voices. Maybe the organizers couldn’t anticipate the wild response from the floor of the United Center,” Taylor added.
Despite the disappointment, Taylor was gracious about the situation, calling it a “great and inspirational, quintessentially American moment.” He emphasized how honored he was to be part of the event, even if he didn’t get to perform as planned.

James Taylor has a long history of supporting the Democratic Party. He performed at the 2012 DNC and sang “America the Beautiful” at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. His planned performance at the 2024 DNC was highly anticipated, but unfortunately, the circumstances didn’t allow for it to happen.
The first night of the convention did feature other notable performances, including country singer Mickey Guyton and Americana artist Jason Isbell. The event is set to continue with more performances and speeches from key figures in the Democratic Party, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and former President Bill Clinton.
While Taylor’s absence was a disappointment to many, the convention continues to be a significant event, marking the official start of the general election season.
The four-day event, running from August 19 to August 22, brings together the party’s delegates to formally pledge their support for Harris and Walz as they head into the 2024 presidential election.
As the convention moves forward, the focus remains on unity and preparation for the upcoming election, with speeches and performances designed to energize and inspire the party’s base.
